LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 5-ranked USC men's tennis team defeated No. 55 Clemson, 4-2, by winning four-of-six singles matches on Tuesday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the victory, the Trojans improve to 12-3 overall, while the Tigers fall to 8-10.
USC and Clemson elected not to play doubles due to the fact that the Tigers played an earlier match at Marks Stadium against Princeton. Princeton defeated Clemson, 4-3.
Starting in singles, sophomore Ruben Torres was the first off the court for the Trojans with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tyler Manring at No. 5. Seniors Nick Rainey and Andrew Park followed with wins against Clemson's Micah Thompson and Goran Sterljovski to put the Trojans up 3-0.
Just a win away from securing the match victory, USC's Damien Spizzo, who led 7-6, 4-1 at No. 6, was defaulted and Clemson's Jimmy Poole collected the Tigers first point. But freshman Prakash Amritraj, playing at center court, put the match away for the Trojans with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Marko Gojanovic.
USC returns to action on Thursday, March 21, against No. 27 Minnesota at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
