Women's Tennis Advances To NCAA Second Round

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 11-ranked USC women's tennis team (18-7) defeated unranked Oral Roberts, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament. The Women of Troy will face No. 39 Oregon (4-2 winner over UNLV in the first round) on Sunday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium. The Golden Eagles end their season with an 11-10 overall record.
"I thought we played extremely well and very sharp today, especially considering our players just finished with finals," said USC seventh-year head coach Richard Gallien. "I could not be more excited about tomorrow's match. I have a lot of respect for Oregon and their coaching staff. It is going to be a great match-up."
The Trojans held Oral Roberts scoreless as they grabbed the first point of the match with two 8-0 wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles spots. The two doubles matches were completed in a mere 25 minutes.
With a 1-0 lead, USC began singles play by winning the first set at all six positions and only allowing seven total points. Luana Magnani was the first off the court for the Women of Troy as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Oral Roberts's Claire Waltman at No. 2. The Trojans' third and fourth points were clinched simultaneously as Maureen Diaz defeated the Eagles' Rachel Budd, 6-1, 6-0, at court four and Melissa Esmero beat Barbara Urbaniak, 6-1, 6-0, at court six to secure the USC win. All remaining matches were suspended.
