Jewel Peterson Advances To NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. - USC women's tennis junior Jewel Peterson advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2002 NCAA Division I Singles Championships by defeating UCLA's Sara Walker, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, on Wednesday at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.
The seventh-seeded Peterson will face third-seed Jessica Lehnhoff in the quarterfinals to be played on Thursday, May 23, at 11 a.m. Lehnhoff defeated Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania, 6-1, 6-2, to advance.
This will be Peterson's second appearance in the NCAA Singles Quarterfinals. As a freshman, Peterson defeated Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame, Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt and Karin Palme of Arizona State in the first three rounds before falling to eventual-champion Lauren Granville of Stanford.
In her first appearance in the individual championships, freshman Luana Magnani defeated William & Mary's Jessica Arthur, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round, but fell to the Cardinal's eighth-seeded Lauren Kalvaria, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round.
