Hoskins, Torres And Wright Compete At Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - USC men's tennis players Drew Hoskins, Ruben Torres and Brian Wright opened their fall season by competing at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic last week, Oct. 10-12. Hoskins, a junior transfer from Texas, led the trio by advancing to the championship match in his first tournament at Troy.
Hoskins and Torres competed in the Flight A singles bracket, while Wright competed in Flight B.
After beating UCSB's Nick Eddelson, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round, Wright was eliminated in round two by Romain Massaro of UNLV, 6-0, 6-2.
Torres, the only Trojan there with playing experience at USC, got past Lennard Maacki of Pacific, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, Jake Livant of Cal, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and UCLA's Krystof Kwinta, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the first three rounds. He was eventually eliminated in the semifinals by eventual-champion Alberto Francis of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2.
Hoskins first took care of Fresno State's No. 1 player Stefan Suta, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in front of his hometown crowd. In the following rounds he defeated Nick Weiss of Washington, 6-1, 6-1, Arnar Sigurdsson of Pacific, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Santa Clara's Gurnot Fischer, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the championship match.
Despite his efforts, Hoskins fell to Francis in Sunday's tournament final, 6-4, 6-4.
The Trojans also competed in doubles as Hoskins and Torres paired to defeat Oregon's Aaron Spencer and Sven Swinnen, 8-4, in the first round, then advanced to the semifinals thanks to a second round default. The pair was beat by UCLA's Francis and Kwinta, 8-5, in the semis.
