MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 11-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team fell 9-6 to No. 3 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match Saturday afternoon at Releigh Runnels Memorial Pool. Junior Juraj Zatovic led the Trojans with four goals.
The loss dropped the Waves to 11-12 on the season and 2-5 in MPSF play. The Trojans improved to 18-3 overall and 4-2 in conference action. Saturday's match was televised on a tape-delay basis by CSTV.
Pepperdine was held scoreless in the first quarter as USC jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Grant Miller and Matt Digges each scored second-quarter goals and the two teams were tied 2-2 heading to the half.
The third quarter would be a roller coaster ride for both teams as the Trojans jumped out to a lead that lasted only 0:21 before Josh Acosta found the back of the net tie the game. USC would then score three straight goals as they seemed to be putting the match out of reach.
Pepperdine retaliated with two goals of their own as Acosta and Digges each scored their second goal of the game to bring the Waves within one heading into the final quarter of play.
Despite Digges third goal of the match, USC was able to pull away in the fourth and go on to hand the Waves the loss.
