TUCSON, Ariz. - The 19th-ranked USC men's tennis team had little trouble against 38th-ranked Arizona, sweeping the Wildcats, 7-0, on Friday afternoon in Tucson. With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-1, while Arizona falls to 6-2. The match does not count against conference records.
"This was just what the doctor ordered," said USC head coach Peter Smith. "Arizona had not lost the doubles point all year so for us to come out and win doubles made us feel good. It was the perfect way to get things started and we played well. Now we have a big task ahead of us tomorrow when we face Arizona State."
USC surrendered only one doubles match for the afternoon. The Wildcats' Roger Matalonga and Colin O'Grady managed to defeat USC's Johan Berg and Adriano Biasella, 8-4, at center court, but the Trojans claimed win at courts two and three to secure the doubles point.
Biasella bounced back to capture the first singles victory by beating Tom Lloyd, 6-4, 6-2, at the No.2 spot. Berg followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at court three over Matalonga to give USC a 3-0 lead in the match.
Even though Arizona pushed matches at the No. 1, 4 and 5 positions to a third set, Drew Hoskins clinched USC's victory with a 6-4, 7-6(9) victory over Tim Mullane at No. 6.
