USC goalie Adam Shilling anchored the men's water polo team through four more wins as the Trojans posted their sixth straight tournament victory by claiming back-to-back Southern California Tournament titles. For his outstanding efforts in the cage over the weekend, Shilling has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Player of the Week. It is the junior's second career weekly award from the MPSF, and USC's second this season.
Shilling smacked down a career-high 12 saves in USC's 6-5 win over Cal in the championship game of the tournament. He finished the tournament with 36 saves in his 13 periods of play in the cage. Shilling had nine saves against UC Santa Barbara, seven in three periods against UC Irvine and eight in USC's 10-9 semifinal win over UC San Diego before recording 12 against Cal in the final. With the win, USC improved to 15-0 on the season to hold onto a 34-game winning streak. Shilling now boasts 262 career saves, including 86 this season as the Trojans stand out as the nation's top defensive team with just 5.6 goals allowed per game.
Shilling and the Trojans are now gearing up to host crosstown rival UCLA this weekend. The Trojans square off against the Bruins at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 21) at McDonald's Swim Stadium. On Sunday, USC will play host to St. Francis at noon.
