LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Trojans past and present crowded the McDonald's Swim Stadium on Sunday to get a little extra tune-up in the water at the USC Men's Water Polo Alumni Game. Members of USC's three national championship teams splashed down to face off against one another, but it was the current Trojan squad that reigned victorious with an 11-8 win over their esteemed alumni.
It was the USC newcomers who did the most damage to the alums, with the fresh faces of junior transfer Gabor Sarusi and freshman J.W. Krumpholz each rifling in three goals for the 2006 Trojans. Still, the top scorer in the game was 2004 All-MPSF selection Cameron Kaiser, who drilled four goals for the alumni.
The 2006 team rolled out to a solid 7-2 halftime lead and held that five-goal edge entering the final period of play. That was when the Alumni caught fire and outscored the current squad 4-2. The inspired comeback efforts were too late in the game, however, and the 2006 Trojans withstood the run to lock down the 11-8 win. USC junior Adam Shilling put up 11 saves in the cage for the winning effort.
Getting into the scoring column for the Alumni were 2005 Cutino Award winner Juraj Zatovic, 1998 All-American and current assistant coach Marko Pintaric, 2002 All-MPSF selection Jordan Hewko and 2004 All-American Nick Andrejich with a goal apiece. The 2006 Trojans also got single goals from Thomas Hale, Drew Vyn, Jovan Vranes, Arjan Ligtenberg and Jordan Thompson.
