IRVINE, CALIF. - The top-ranked USC men's water polo team have rolled undefeated into the semifinals of the Southern California Tournament with a pair of wins in bracket play on Saturday at Corona del Mar High School. The Trojans put their offensive balance on display once again, as they continued their trend of having a different player lead the team in scoring in each game. Trevor Clark led USC with three goals to open the day in a 19-1 win over Redlands, and then Jovan Vranes tallied a hat trick of his own to help push USC past Loyola Marymount 11-3. In its undefeated run through the first 10 games of the year, USC has now had 10 different Trojans emerge as a top scorer. The Trojans now take a perfect 10-0 overall record into tomorrow's semifinal against No. 3 UCLA at 10:40 a.m. at UC Irvine's Anteater Pool on Sunday (Oct. 14), with the championship match scheduled for 5:20 p.m. USC has won the past four SoCal Tournament titles.
To kick off the day, the Trojans set a new record for the season with a grand total of 14 different players scoring for USC in a powerful win over Redlands. USC has now seen 19 players get to the back of the net this year. Leading the offensive charge for the Trojans was senior Trevor Clark, who ripped in three goals for his biggest single-game scoring effort since his freshman season in 2003. Drew Vyn, Jovan Vranes and Tommy Corcoran each added a pair of scores, and the rest of the USC output was served up from the hands of 10 more Trojans.
While the USC offense was firing on 14 cylinders, the Trojan defense was putting up a strong stand against Redlands. Sharing time in the cage were goalies Adam Shilling and Will Cherashore, who combined for four saves in the game. While USC was compiling a 9-0 halftime lead and a 14-0 advantage going into the fourth frame, it wasn't until that final period that Redlands finally broke through the Trojan defense with a score.
In the next game, USC saw No. 10 LMU take a 2-1 lead in the second period, but the Trojans locked things down from there. Seven straight USC scores ran the Trojans up to an 8-2 lead before the Lions struck for the last time in the final period. By then, however, USC had more than taken control, as the Trojans went on to tally an 11-3 win on the hands of seven different players. Vranes led all with three, while Clark shone once again with a pair and Matt Sagehorn also added two for the Trojans.
With two more outstanding efforts in the cage, senior goalie Adam Shilling added 11 more saves to his career tally, bringing him up to 443 career saves to now stand as the Trojans' No. 6 all-time goalie in saves.
