USC sophomore two-meter man Shea Buckner has been named the MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week for the first time in his Trojan career after tallying eight goals over the weekend to help USC claim its fifth straight SoCal Tournament championship. He is the third Trojan to earn the honor this season during top-ranked USC's undefeated run through the first half of the 2007 season.
On the final day of competition at the SoCal Tournament, Buckner had a team-high two goals and added four assists for the Trojans as they beat crosstown rival UCLA 7-6 in the morning's semifinal. In the championship game against Stanford, Buckner led all once again with four goals - all scored in the first half - to help power the Trojans to an eventual 11-6 win over the Cardinal. He also added two assists and drew three ejections, including earning a 5-meter penalty shot. The four-goal effort against Stanford ties Buckner's career high and holds him as the team's top scorer on the year with 17 goals. USC is still undefeated at 12-0 and ranks No. 1 in the nation.
USC next faces UC Santa Barbara in an MPSF clash in Santa Barbara a 12 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 20).
