SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - A strong run through the first four rounds of the ITA West Regional in San Diego saw USC junior Amanda Fink power into the quarterfinals for a matchup against a familiar Pac-10 foe, UCLA's Riza Zalameda. Zalameda ended up withdrawing from the match, pushing 10th seeded Fink into tomorrow's semifinal against fourth seeded Nadia Abdala of Arizona State. Fink will also play in the doubles semifinals alongside teammate Gabriela Niculescu after a good run through doubles action. The sixth seeded doubles team in the tournament, Fink/Niculescu will square off against No. 2 seed Gantcheva/Nedeltcheva of UNLV.
After a first-round singles bye, Fink cruised through straight sets against UC Santa Barbara's Jill Damion, ASU's Ana Victoria Lind and then Arizona's Danielle Steinberg in the Round of 16.
USC freshman Lyndsay Kinstler also worked her way into the Round of 16 after toppling Cal State Northridge's Kankey Koichumanova in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round and then beating San Diego State's Eliska Krausova 7-5, 6-3 in the third. She fell in the Round of 16 to Zalameda.
The Women of Troy had eight players enter the singles action. Three played first-round matches (the rest had byes), and all three won their opening match. Freshmen Maria Sanchez, Cristala Andrews and Leyla Entekhabi all won their first match of the tournament to move into the second round. There, USC saw sophomores Sarah Fansler and Gabriela Niculescu, junior Amanda Fink and freshman Lyndsay Kinstler tack up wins to reach the third round.
In doubles action, USC had three pairs earn first-round byes. Entekhabi/Kinstler were knocked out in the second round, but Fink/Niculescu and Andrews/Fansler moved on to play in the Round of 16. Andrews/Fansler fell in their match with UCLA's Joelson/McGoodwin, while Fink/Niculescu managed a shutout of SDSU's Cadua/Trunk to move into the quarters. There, the Trojan duo topped Pepperdine's Bhagarva/Bandere in the quarterfinal to punch their ticket to Sunday's semifinals.
