USC Doubles Pair Wins West Regional Title

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The USC women's tennis team can claim another successful run at the ITA West Regionals following a championship effort by Trojan doubles pair Amanda Fink / Gabriela Niculescu. The junior and sophomore combined forces for a winning effort at the tournament, powering through doubles action to finally post a tight 9-7 win over Arizona State duo Nadia and Laila Abdala in the title match on Sunday.

To get to the final, Fink/Niculescu had to get past No. 2 seeded Gantcheva-Nedeltcheva of UNLV in the semifinals. The Women of Troy took care of the UNLV pair 8-4, punching their ticket to the final.

It was a busy day for Fink, who was also in the singles semifinals against Nadia Abdala. The ASU player managed to top Fink in the semis with a 6-3, 6-4 decision. As a freshman in 2005, Fink won the ITA West Regional singles title.

On the consolation side of things, USC freshman Leyla Entekhabi won out with a run of five victories including two matches against her fellow USC freshmen. In the quarterfinals, Entekhabi took on Cristala Andrews 6-1, 6-4. Then in the semifinals, Entekhabi crossed paths with Maria Sanchez, whom Entekhabi posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over in the semis to move on.
