As the Trojans turn to 2007 NCAA Championship competition this weekend, the USC men's water polo team has planted an all-time best seven players on All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams. Seniors Tommy Corcoran and Adam Shilling and sophomore Matt Sagehorn were both honored as All-MPSF First Team members. Senior Gabor Sarusi has been named to the All-MPSF Second Team; sophomore J.W. Krumpholz has earned a spot on the All-MPST Third Team; and sophomore Shea Buckner and junior Arjan Ligtenberg received All-MPSF Honorable Mention.
For senior two-meter man Tommy Corcoran, this is his third All-MPSF selection of his career and first-ever First Team pick. With 20 goals so far this year, Corcoran has run his career scoring total up to 89 goals as he prepares to play in his third NCAA Tournament. He is coming off last week's accolades on the MPSF All-Tournament Team.
Another 2007 MPSF All-Tournament Team pick, Senior goalie Adam Shilling was an All-MPSF First Team selection last season as well, and this year his saves total has expanded to 152 this season while holding the conference's top goals-against mark of 5.7. Shilling has taken over the No. 6 all-time slot in the USC record books for career saves this season, holding 515 career saves entering the NCAA tournament.
Sophomore driver Matt Sagehorn has picked up his first MPSF honors this year, first named to the MPSF All-Tournament Team and now selected to the All-MPSF First Team. The sophomore has moved up to lead the Trojans in scoring this season with 35 goals. Thanks to a streak of double-digit scoring efforts, he's tallied 29 goals in the past 10 games for the Trojans, including three straight hat tricks during USC's run to the MPSF Tournament championship.
Also earning his first career MPSF honors this season is senior two-meter man Gabor Sarusi, who has been named to the All-MPSF Second Team thanks to a 15-goal effort so far this season, including several big goals along the way. On the All-MPSF Third Team chart stands sophomore two-meter J.W. Krumpholz, who has knocked in 18 goals this year on the way to his first-ever MPSF nod.
On the honorable mention list are two more first-time picks for the Trojans. In his first season at Troy, sophomore two-meter man Shea Buckner was USC's leading scorer for the start of the season and sits at No. 2 now with 24 goals. Junior two-meter defender Arjan Ligtenberg has been another key part of USC's third straight season leading the nation in defense, and he's added six goals this season.
USC is now headed to Palo Alto in search of a fourth NCAA title for the Trojans. Top-seeded USC opens against LMU at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 1) in the NCAA Semifinals. The championship game is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
