Junior Rebecca Soni swept the breaststroke events and senior diver Kim Popp did the same on the springboard contests to pace the No. 15 USC women's swimming and diving team in a 178-120 defeat at No. 4 Arizona on Friday (Nov. 9) in Tucson, Ariz.
USC fell to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10. Arizona improved to 2-0, 1-0.
Soni won the 100y breast in 1:01.25 and the 200y breast in 2:12.13. Both times are NCAA automatic qualifying marks, though she has already gone faster in both distances this year (1:00.81 in the 100y breast, 2:10.25 in the 200).
Senior Whitney Hentzen won the 500y free in 4:52.69, lowering her season-best NCAA `B' cut from its previous 4:52.92.
Junior Rachael Waller won the 200y free in 1:49.25, not far off her season-best NCAA consideration time of 1:48.81.
Popp won the 1-meter springboard (236.32) and the 3-meter springboard (264.30). She led USC 1-2-3 finishes in both events as sophomore Alexis Demond took second on 1-meter and third on 3-meter and freshman Christine Petrilli was second on 3-meter and third on 1-meter.
The 200y medley relay of junior Kristen Lahey, Soni, junior Emily Goetsch and Waller swam to a USC season-best 1:44.02.
Goetsch was also third in the 200y fly (2:06.28) and senior Brittany Allen was third in the 500y free (5:00.55).
USC takes on unranked Arizona State on Saturday (Nov. 10) at noon (MST).
