NORTHRIDGE, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's water polo team flexed its scoring muscle once more with its fifth double-figure scoring effort of the year. The Women of Troy posted a 16-8 win over host Cal State Northridge on Thursday afternoon, improving their record to 5-1 on the season behind a high-scoring second period against the Matadors. This was the first MPSF match for both teams, putting USC at 5-1, 1-0 and moving CSUN to 1-2, 0-1. It was the third time in six games that USC has had nine players score.
Leading 4-2 after the first frame, USC topped out with eight second-period goals to power ahead 12-2 by halftime. While the Trojan defense shut down the Matadors in the second, the USC offense ramped up thanks in part to three goals from freshman Alexandra Kiss, who finished the game leading all scorers with four goals for her second multiple-goal performance of the year. Erika Figge, Veronika Bartunkova, Jana Wenger and Brittany Hayes all contributed goals as well in the high-scoring period to help lift USC to a comfortable halftime lead.
The teams matched each other goal-for-goal in the third period to make it a 16-6 USC advantage entering the fourth period, where CSUN managed to keep USC off the boards for the frame while putting in two of its own for a 16-8 final.
USC remains on the road next week with a trip to Northern California to face No. 3 Stanford and No. 8 San Jose State. The Trojans face the Cardinal at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 17) and then play the Spartans at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 18) to continue MPSF action.
