The top seed for the upcoming NCAA Championships, the USC men's water polo team has recently landed six players on All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams for their standout 2009 season to date. Leading the way with his third straight All-MPSF pick and second consecutive All-MPSF First Team award is senior J.W. Krumpholz. Also rounding out a hat trick of MPSF awards for their careers are seniors Shea Buckner and Matt Sagehorn with spots on the All-MPSF Second Team and Honorable Mention list, respectively. Meanwhile, fellow seniors Justin Rappel and Jordan Thompson have secured their first All-MPSF selection, also with Second Team and Honorable Mention honors, respectively. And last year's MPSF Newcomer of the Year, goalie Joel Dennerley, joins Sagehorn and Thompson as All-MPSF Honorable Mention recipients for 2009.
2009 All-MPSF First Team selection J.W. Krumpholz has had another powerful season for the Trojans as they turn to defend their NCAA championship this weekend. Krumpholz is third on the team in scoring with 33 goals to climb up and rank No. 11 all-time at USC with 134 career goals. This season, the standout two-meter man matched his career high with five goals in a win over Princeton, and he was recently awarded a spot on the MPSF All-Tournament Team. He was the MPSF Co-Player of the Year and a first-teamer as well last season.
All-MPSF Second Team honorees Shea Buckner and Justin Rappel are tag-teaming the top of the Trojan scoring charts this season, as the seniors have each knocked in 41 goals apiece on the way into the NCAA Tournament. Buckner earned 2007 All-MPSF honorable mention in his first season as a Trojan and was a second team pick last season as well, while Rappel's selection this season is the first all-conference award for the senior lefty. Earlier this season, Rappel was named MPSF Player of the Week after helping the Trojans secure their seventh straight SoCal Tournament championship. Both seniors set new career highs this season, with Buckner most recently nailing five goals in USC's opening win over Pacific at the MPSF Championships. Rappel blasted four a couple weeks ago during USC's overtime MPSF win over Stanford.
Earning All-MPSF Honorable Mention this year are Joel Dennerley, Matt Sagehorn and Jordan Thompson. Sagehorn is a three-time all-MPSF selection, having picked up 2007 first team honors and second team accolades in 2008. He's scored 24 goals for the Trojans this year, including a pair of big goals in USC's win over Stanford in the third-place game at the MPSF Championships last weekend. Sagehorn currently holds 124 career goals to rank No. 14 all-time at USC. Dennerley was the MPSF Newcomer of the Year and an All-MPSF Second Team pick last season as a freshman, and the goalie has proven just as powerful for the Trojans again this year. He's nabbed two more MPSF Player of the Week selections, and averages just 4.9 goals-against per game. On the saves front, Dennerley averages 6.6, topping out this season with 12 against Long Beach State to help keep the Trojans as the No. 1 defensive team in the nation once again. For Thompson, this year's All-MPSF Honorable Mention award is the first all-conference pick of the senior's career. He has come up big for the Trojans this year, almost doubling last year's output with 26 goals this season to date. Most recently, Thompson grabbed his first MPSF Player of the Week honor after a four-goal outing against Stanford during MPSF play to set a new career high for the senior two-meter man.
USC's six All-MPSF honorees are all set to travel with their fellow Trojans to Princeton, N.J. this week to compete in the 2009 NCAA Championships. Action begins Saturday (Dec. 5) with a 3 p.m. ET matchup against host Princeton in the semifinals as USC takes aim at back-to-back national championships.
