No. 9 USC Women Grab 5-2 Win At Arizona
April 10, 2009 | Women's Tennis
Despite an 8-1 win from #5 Amanda Fink / Gabriela Niculescu at the No. 1 doubles slot, the point slipped away from the Women of Troy with Arizona wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The 1-0 deficit didn't shake USC's singles focus, however. Three Trojans pinned up straight-set wins to bring USC to within a win of the dual match, and the remaining Trojans in action all went into three-set battles to round out singles play. #26 Amanda Fink, Leyla Entekhabi and Lyndsay Kinstler all made quick work of their Wildcat opponents to give the Trojans a lift in the match. Fink topped Arizona's Marks 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while Entekhabi tacked up a 6-0, 6-3 over Castany at No. 5 and Lyndsay Kinstler beat Huh 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Back in the singles lineup after three matches sidelined by injury was USC's No. 18 Maria Sanchez. The sophomore stepped back into her No. 1 singles slot and pinned up one of those three-set wins for the Trojans. Sanchez gutted out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Arizona's #94 Danielle Steinberg, while #65 Alison Ramos grabbed a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Masschelein at No. 4. At No. 3, #68 Gabriela Niculescu wound up falling 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Landsman in Arizona's lone singles win of the day.
With that 5-2 win in the books, USC now turns to face No. 25 Arizona State in a match that could clinch at least a share of the Pac-10 title for the Trojans for the first time in program history. USC will visit Arizona State for a 12 p.m. match on Saturday (April 11) in Tempe. The Trojans' final dual match of the regular season has crosstown rival UCLA coming to Marks Stadium for a 3 p.m. showdown next Friday (April 17).
