Joel Dennerley collected 28 saves over the weekend, but over half of them came in a dominating championship game performance to push the Trojans to a 9-8 victory over host UCLA in the title match of the SoCal Tournament. For his powerful performance in the cage, the junior goalie picks up his second selection of the season as the MPSF Player of the Week.
Against the Bruins in the title match, Dennerley made two impressive stops against 5-meter penalty shots in the game and made many more key blocks to make sure USC would never trail in the match, as he finished the game with a season-high 15 saves. Dennerley also had a steal on UCLA's final possession to wrap up the 9-8 USC victory. The win over the Bruins secured USC's eighth consecutive SoCal Tournament championship, and held the Trojans undefeated at 15-0 on the year.
This is Dennerley's sixth career pick as MPSF Player of the Week and his second of the year. He currently ranks No. 7 all-time at USC in career saves with 515, and is nine away from taking over at No. 6 all-time.
Dennerley and the Trojans will head to Palo Alto this weekend for an MPSF showdown against Stanford on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 3 p.m. at the Cardinal's Avery Aquatics Complex.
