Freshman Sophia Popov is tied for first after a 4-under opening round to help the No. 2 USC women's golf team finish in second place after the first day of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Monday (Oct. 4) at the Tacoma (Wash.) Country and Golf Club.
The Women of Troy, coming off of two third-place finishes to open the season, are in second place at 3-under 285, one stroke back of first-place California. Host Washington is third (293) with Oregon (297) and UC Davis (297) tied for fourth.
Popov, playing in her second event, registered her best round as a Trojan. She was 3-under on the front 9 and 1-under on the back 9, including birdies on 16 and 17 to finish strongly with a 68. She is tied with Emily Childs and Joanne Lee, both of Cal.
Senior Lizette Salas had a solid outing, tying for fifth at 1-under 71. She was 1-under on the front 9 and even on the back 9 with three birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Junior Lisa McCloskey is tied for seventh at even 72. Things were going smoothly with a 1-under front 9 before a triple bogey on the 10th hole. She didn't let the hole rattle her, however, finishing the final eight holes at 2-under to get back to par.
Junior Inah Park is tied for 14th at 2-over 74, rallying from a 4-over front 9 with a 2-under back 9. Sophomore Cyna Rodriguez tied for 30th at 4-over 76.
Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday.
