Senior Lizette Salas and junior Inah Park each carded rounds of 1-under 71 to help the No. 2 USC women's golf team maintain second place on the second day of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Tuesday (Oct. 5) at the Tacoma (Wash.) Country and Golf Club.
The Women of Troy, coming off of two third-place finishes to open the season, remained in second after a 1-over 289 second round that has them at 2-under 574 (285-289), seven strokes behind first-place California (284-283-657). Host Washington is third (591), though well off the pace, while Pepperdine moved into fourth (596).
USC has three players embedded in the top 7 and all five players in the top 19 of the 15-team event. Salas (71-71) and freshman Sophia Popov (68-74) are tied for third at 2-under 142. Cal's Emily Childs is first at 8-under 136 while her teammate Joanne Lee is second at 4-under 140.
Salas opened with seven consecutive pars before bogeying 8 and 9. She got right back on track by birdying 10 and 11. Though she bogeyed 12, she birdied twice more in the final six holes to finish under par. Popov was not quite as sharp as her 4-under first round but was still solid enough to remain tied for third with Salas.
Park, meanwhile, turned in her second straight solid round with just a bogey on 9 and birdies on 11 and 15 to finish under par and move into a tie for seventh at 1-over 145 (74-71).
Junior Lisa McCloskey is tied for 12th at 3-over 147 (72-75) after a day in which she sunk four birdies to help offset struggles on other holes. Sophomore Cyna Rodriguez is tied for 19th at 5-over 149 (76-73). She was 1-under for the round before bogeys on 17 and 18.
Play concludes Wednesday.
