TULSA, OKLA. -- The eighth-seeded doubles team of Trojans Steve Johnson and Daniel Nguyen have secured advancement in the competitive ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships with a win in today's Round of 32 in Tulsa, Okla. Ranked No. 9 in the nation, the Trojan duo have a Round of 16 match set for tomorrow against Oklahoma's Beleleu/Paval.
The two Trojans had a busy day in Tulsa, as each had singles matches to contend with as well. Seventh-seeded Johnson slipped in a three-setter to Duke's Reid Carleton, falling 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2 in a rare loss for the No. 7-ranked Trojan. HIs doubles partner Nguyen also had singles on his agenda, and the sophomore pulled out a three-set comeback win in the first round in beating SMU's Artem Baradah 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Nguyen stumbled in the Round of 32 later, however, falling 6-2, 6-1 to Virginia's Alex Domijan. That puts the pair on doubles duty for tomorrow.
Peter Lucassen had worked his way into the main draw with a winning run through qualifying, but lost his main draw first round match 6-3, 6-3 to UNC's Jose Hernandez. Full USC results are listed below.
