USC junior guard Briana Gilbreath has kicked off the 2010-11 women's basketball season with a bang, standing as the first player of the season to pick up Pac-10 Player of the Week honors. It's the first career selection for Gilbreath, who helped lead the Women of Troy to victory in their season opener on Friday. Gilbreath and the Trojans are all set to do battle at Duke today (Nov. 15) in a 7 p.m. ET matchup in Durham, N.C.
To net her first career Pac-10 Player of the Week award, Briana Gilbreath opened the year with a double-double to lead USC to an upset win over No. 22 Gonzaga in the Trojans' season opener. Gilbreath had a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for USC. Gilbreath scored 15 of her final 21 points during the second half in helping to push USC to a comeback win over the Bulldogs.
USC had trailed by seven at halftime, but with Gilbreath's help the Trojans pulled ahead in the second half, getting a key bucket from the junior with 33 second left to go ahead 78-71. The 21-point outing was just a point away from Gilbreath's career high, as USC opens the year with a 1-0 start thanks to the win over ranked Gonzaga.
