
No. 6 USC Registers Sweep At Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior All-America outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Paris, France/Redondo Union HS) led with a team-high 10 kills Friday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy swept the Oregon State Beavers (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) in a Pac-10 Conference match.
USC (23-4, 12-4) got strong production from its middles as junior Lauren Williams hit .778 with seven kills and no errors while freshman Alexis Olgard hit .583 with eight kills and one error (8-1-12) along with four blocks. Falyn Fonoimoana chipped in seven kills for a .357 night while junior setter Kendall Bateman had 29 assists and six digs.
The Women of Troy hit .329 for the match, including .450 in the third set with 10 kills against one lone error.
Mona Kressl led the Beavers (8-21, 1-14) with 10 kills and five blocks as Jill Sawatzky had nine kills, but hit .080 (9-7-25).
A mini 4-1 run in the middle of the first set helped USC to pull away from a 9-8 lead. OSU scored twice after being down 24-20, but Megan McBride's service error handed the set to the Trojans. Natalie Hagglund found the magic touch in the second set as USC scored eight straight points on her serve for an early 9-1 advantage. Olgard later pushed the lead to 12 points at 22-10 with Williams making it a 2-0 lead in the match with a kill.
With the Women of Troy trailing 9-6 in the third, it was senior defensive specialist Geena Urango knocking down two aces as part of a crushing 13-2 run as another service error by the Beavers later completed the sweep.
USC continues Pac-10 Conference play tomorrow night in a 7 p.m. match at No. 23 Oregon and can clinch third place in the conference with a win tomorrow or next Friday at UCLA.
Notes: Kendall Bateman moved into sixth place on USC's career list...now with 2,767 career assists, she passed Tracy Lindquist (2,766) and Monika Cavaliere (2,747) in tonight's match...Bateman is now behind Missy McCaw (1990-93) for fifth place as McCaw had 3,319 career assists...Alex Jupiter passed the 1,500th career point milestone tonight...with 1,501.5 points, she will have a chance to take over second place tomorrow night behind Jessica Gysin (1,514.0) and Bibiana Candelas (1,512.0) on USC's career points list...Jupiter now has 506.5 points on the season, good for seventh place on USC's single-season list...with three solo blocks tonight, Jupiter now has 34 solo blocks for the season.
