Sophomore Haley Anderson won a pair of races for the second day in a row while senior Lyndsay DePaul, junior Katinka Hosszu, sophomore Jessica Schmitt and freshman Kasey Carlson were also winners, but it wasn't quite enough as the No. 3 USC swimming and diving squad was topped by host No. 1 Stanford, 161.5-136.6, on Saturday (Jan. 29).
USC, which lost to No. 4 Cal on Friday, fell to 8-2 overall, 2-2 in the Pac-10. Stanford improved to 7-0, 4-0.
Said USC head coach Dave Salo: "The women came away with two tough losses against two of the absolute best teams in college swimming. Each loss came down to missed opportunities in several very tight races. I am certain what we learned this weekend on the road will better prepare us to compete well at the Pac 10 Championships."
The Trojans opened the meet with a win in the 200y medley relay as senior Presley Bard, Carlson, sophomore Yumi So and DePaul finished in 1:39.85. It was the squad's third-fastest effort in the race this year and topped Stanford's second-place swim by 1.01.
Anderson, a day after posting two wins at Cal, won the 1000y free in 9:40.26, edging Cardinal freshman Andie Taylor by two seconds and defeating their senior specialist Kelsey Ditto as well.
Hosszu battled Stanford senior Kate Dwelley stroke for stroke in the 200y free but Dwelley was first to the wall in 1:45.78 to Hosszu's 1:46.09. DePaul was fourth (1:47.60).
Stanford won a close race in the 100y back, freshman Maya Dirado edging USC's Bard, 54.05 to 54.20 while the Cardinal also took third and fourth.
Carlson won the 100y breast in 1:01.27, well ahead of Stanford's Liz Smith (1:02.01) while Schmitt took third (1:03.14). So just missed a win in the 200y fly, finishing in 1:59.13 to Stanford freshman Felicia Lee's 1:59.11. Taylor was third and Hosszu was fourth (2:00.19).
The Cardinal took 1-2 in the 50y free with Carlson third for USC in 22.84.
Junior Victoria Ishimatsu was nipped on 1-meter, taking second with 309.00 while Stanford's Meg Hostage won with 309.96. Junior Michela Fossati-Bellani was fourth. Ishimatsu was also second on 3-meter (312.60).
Carlson came back to tie for second in a tight 100y free in 49.48, though Dwelley claimed first (49.20). Stanford followed with a sweep of the 200y back with Dirado winning in 1:56.85. Freshman Meghan Hawthorne was fourth (2:02.07).
Schmitt (2:15.43) and freshman Stina Gardell (2:15.51) gave USC a 1-2 finish in the 200y breast and Anderson followed that with a win in the 500y free (4:45.81). Anderson led the entire race but had to hold off Ditto (4:46.19) over the final 100 yards.
DePaul won her specialty, the 100y fly, in 53.28, comfortably ahead of Lee (54.00) while So was fourth (54.30).
Hosszu touched the wall first in the 200y IM (1:59.14), fighting off a pair of Stanford swimmers as Dirado was second (1:59.72) and Smith was third (1:59.74). Gardell was just back of them in fourth (1:59.80).
Stanford's 3:16.95 in the 400y free relay won the race, well ahead of USC's quartet of So, Anderson, Smith and Hosszu (3:26.36).
USC finishes dual meet season when it hosts UCLA on Feb. 12 at noon.
