
No. 3 USC Beats No. 16 Oregon In Four Sets

LOS ANGELES - Senior All-America outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Paris, France/Redondo Union HS) had a match-high 22 kills and a season-high 14 digs Friday as the No. 3 USC women's volleyball team defeated the No. 16 Oregon Ducks, 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21), in a Pac-12 Conference match. Jupiter added two service aces and three blocks for 26.0 points on the night as USC extended its season-long win streak to nine.
Lauren Williams added 10 kills and five blocks while Katie Fuller had 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Senior All-America setter Kendall Bateman had 49 assists with a season-high three kills as the Women of Troy hit .242 in the match. Natalie Hagglund had 25 digs (6.25 dps) for the Trojans.
USC improved to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in conference while Oregon is now 12-5 overall and 5-4 in Pac-12 play. The Trojans have not lost to the Ducks at home since 1990.
Ariana Williams led the Ducks with 15 kills on a .414 night (15-3-29) with five blocks while Katherine Fischer had 10 kills with 20 digs and two blocks. Alaina Bergsma earned the double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while adding eight blocks. Lauren Plum equaled Bateman with 49 assists for the Ducks.
Lauren Williams and Fuller teamed on a block to make it 5-2 for the Women of Troy in the first set. Sara Shaw used a solo block to give USC the 9-4 advantage. Williams and Fuller went back-to-back to push the USC lead to seven points, 15-8. Oregon was unable to put anything late as the Women of Troy finished with the 10-7 run to take the opening set.
Two straight errors by the Ducks gave USC a 9-6 lead in the second set. Down 13-9, Ariana Williams started a key stretch for the Ducks as Oregon unleashed nine straight points for a commanding 18-13 lead. Shellsy Ashen had back-to-back aces as part of the streak. Jupiter brought the Women of Troy within one at 20-19 with both trading points before Shaw tied it a 23-23. After four straight sideouts, Bergsma delivered for the Ducks with Jupiter hitting long for set point as Oregon tied the match.
Hannah Schraer and Jupiter capped an 11-4 run to begin the third set for the Women of Troy. Jupiter and Williams made it an eight-point lead at 16-8 on a block before the Ducks answered the call. Liz Brenner sparked four straight points for the Ducks on the kill as Fischer nailed back-to-back kills to make it 17-14 for USC. Schraer stuffed Ariana Williams for a solo stop and a 21-16 USC score. A USC service error put Oregon back in the set as four straight points cut the deficit to one, 21-20. Schraer and Bateman's block made it 23-21 for the Trojans. After a Duck hitting error gave set point to USC, Bergsma tallied another kill. Oregon went to Bergsma again, but Jupiter and Williams put a finish to the set with the block.
With an 8-7 lead in the fourth set, a UO serving error sparked a 6-2 run for the Women of Troy for the 14-9 advantage. Bergsma started four straight points again for the Ducks as her solo block made it 14-13. Ariana Williams kept the deficit at one for Oregon, 18-17, before Fuller's kill started three straight points for USC. The remainder of the set would feature consecutive sideouts as the host Trojans were able to close out the match.
USC continues Pac-12 Conference action tomorrow against Oregon State at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast through a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Alex Jupiter's previous high for digs this season was 13 (set twice)...Jupiter now has 4,106 career attempts, third on USC's all-time list (school record is 4,356, held by Jennifer Kessy)...Jupiter now has 1,657 career kills and needs 23 to tie Tracy Clark (1982-85) for third place on USC's all-time list...with one solo block, Jupiter now has 105 career solo blocks and is tied with Janice Johnson (1982-85) for sixth place all-time at USC...Kendall Bateman now has 3,795 career assists and needs 30 assists to tie Toni Anderson (2000-03) for third place on USC's all-time list.
