USC Freshmen Leap To ITA Singles Semis

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - USC's newcomers played like collegiate veterans today in their first venture into the depths of the ITA Women's Southwest Regional Championships. Freshman Zoe Scandalis came up with a big comeback win over teammate Danielle Lao in her quarterfinal bout today, and Sabrina Santamaria upended the No. 2 seed in the tourney to advance to tomorrow's semifinals in San Diego, Calif. Santamaria will have double duty tomorrow, with a doubles semifinal clash set alongside teammate Kaitlyn Christian after the freshman-sophomore pair snagged two wins today in doubles play.
A bigtime Trojan clash came up early today as top-seeded defending champion Danielle Lao squared off against No. 10 seeded Zoe Scandalis in a quarterfinal matchup. Lao grabbed the first set, but Scandalis shrugged off the advantage by her junior teammate and wound up fighting back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win to jump the freshman into a semifinal slot against Long Beach State's No. 11 seed Anais Dallara. Meanwhile, another USC freshman was performing some heroics against another high seed. Sabrina Santamaria squared off against No. 2 seeded McCall Jones of UCLA, and the Trojan had no qualms in taking a quick lead against the Bruin. Santamaria tacked up a 6-1, 7-5 win to put the freshman up against No. 8 seed Natasha Marks of Arizona in tomorrow's semis.
