Senior Katinka Hosszu, junior Haley Anderson and sophomores Kasey Carlson and Vladimir Morozov continued USC's strong weekend with victories on the final day of the 2011 Texas Invitational in Austin on Saturday (Dec. 3).
Junior Haley Anderson held off Texas' Kaitlin Pawlowicz in the 1650y free to open the final evening with a winning time of 16:03.22, a strong NCAA `B' cut. Anderson was third at the NCAAs last year in the race.
Freshman Cary Wright led USC's in the men's 1650y free with a 15:26.26 (`B'), good for fourth. Sophomore Nick Johnson (15:29.81) and senior Julian Bonse (15:30.44) also claimed `B' cuts just inside the 15:30.69 standard.
Sophomore Meghan Hawthorne led USC's women in the 200y back with an 11th-place 1:58.13, a season best `B' cut.
Like he did in the 100y back, junior Alex Lendrum tiptoed near the long-held record in the 200y back during a second-place finish, touching in a PR 1:40.82 (`A'), just off Lenny Krayzelburg's 1:40.59. Junior Nick Karpov was seventh in 1:47.44 though his prelim 1:44.28 gave him a `B' cut. Freshman Luca Spinazzola's 1:46.66 was just off the 1:46.60 `B' cutoff.
Junior Christel Simms led USC finishers in the women's 100y free with a 49.85 (and went 49.75 in prelims for a `B' cut).
Sophomore Vladimir Morozov won the 100y free in 42.32, just off the NCAA `A' cut, while sophomore Dimitri Colupaev was third in 43.35, another `B' cut. The pair are the top two fastest Trojans ever in the race.. Just outside the top 10 is senior Jeff Daniels, who took fourth with a PR 43.65 for a `B' cut as well. Sophomore Jack Wagner claimed 12th (44.44) though it was his prelim 44.31 that notched a `B' cut.
Sophomore Kasey Carlson, a day after approaching Rebecca Soni's seemingly untouchable school mark in the 100y breast, dominated the 200y breast with a winning 2:08.40 for another `A' cut and a PR.
Junior Jessica Schmitt took fourth in 2:10.66 and went 2:10.54 in prelims for a very strong `B' cut while junior Jordan Danny took seventh in 2:12.00 for a solid `B' cut as well. Freshman Andrew Malone led USC in the men's 200y breast with a 10th in 1:59.18 (`B').
Senior Katinka Hosszu, who earlier in the meet broke her school records in the 200y IM, 200y free and 400y IM, just missed doing it a fourth time while winning the 200y fly. She touched in 1:51.03 to win by almost four seconds, just off her 1:51.02 from last year. Hosszu won NCAA titles last season in the 200y and 400y IM and the 200y fly.
Seniors Tanya Krisman (1:56.16) and Amanda Smith (1:56.28) and junior Yumi So (1:57.65) went 4-5-6 in the 200y fly final, all with `B' cuts.
The Trojans put three swimmers into the men's 200y fly final as junior Justin DiFederico (1:46.97, `B'), sophomore Chase Bloch (1:47.72, `B') and Wright (1:49.43) went 6-7-8. Wright's prelim effort (1:47.97) was also a `B' cut.
USC's 400y relay of Carlson, Simms, Smith and Hosszu finished fourth in 3:16.24, a strong `B' cut and less than a second off the school record.
Troy's 400y free relay of Colupaev, Wagner, Daniels and Morozov won with a 2:51.85, less than a second off the `A' standard. Colupaev's opening 42.95 gave USC the lead and made him the second-fastest Trojan ever over 100 yards, behind only Morozov. Troy fell slightly behind after 200 yards but reclaimed a 0.18 edge with 100 to go. From there, Morozov motored home with the fastest split of the night to secure the relay win.
