SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's water polo team spread the wealth once again in pinning up an 11-8 win over No. 7 San Diego State in the teams' MPSF opener. Back at the site of their 2010 NCAA Championship victory, the Trojans jumped ahead 4-0 in the match with the Aztecs and kept control down the stretch. USC improves to 6-1 overall and takes a 1-0 start in conference competition.
USC matched its quick start from its previous game in taking a 4-0 lead in the first period of play on a goal from Patricia Jancso followed by three from the hands of San Diego natives Dominique Sardo and Sarah Van Norman, who knocked in back-to-back scores. The Aztecs would close to make it a one-goal by halftime, however, forcing the Trojans to regroup for the second half. San Diego State stayed stubborn in the early goings of the third period, keeping it at a one-goal affair in making it 7-6. But USC generated a powerful response in rifling in three straight scores from Trojan seniors - two from Kristen Dronberger and one from Joelle Bekhazi -- before the close of the frame to take a 10-6 lead into the fourth period. The Aztecs were too far behind by then, and the Trojans kept their upper hand on the way to the 11-8 final.
USC had four players finish with two goals apiece, as Kristen Dronberger, Patricia Jancso, Dominique Sardo and Sarah Van Norman each punched in a pair.
