LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 17 USC women's tennis team pulled out of a tight doubles battle to pin up a string of six straight singles matches as the Trojans topped No. 60 San Diego State 7-0 at Marks Stadium today. Valeria Pulido busted through with the clinching match with her comeback push from the No. 5 slot to grab a three-setter that secured the win for the Trojans. USC improves to 4-1 overall with the victory.
The doubles point got interesting after USC's Lyndsay Kinstler and Danielle Lao tacked up their solid 8-2 win over Colman/Ellison at the No. 3 slot. The other two courts were locked up even, and San Diego State would edge ahead on both courts soon after. On court one, USC's #11 Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos saw their 6-3 lead slip away as Aguilar/Wais managed wins the rest of the way. That 8-6 win in the Aztecs' favor evened the score and left the balance hanging at the No. 2 slot. There, USC's #80 Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez also saw a lead dissipate to the tune of a 6-5 deficit. But the Women of Troy would rally on court two. Christian held on from the service line to even it 6-6 before USC managed to break the Aztecs next, and Sanchez served out the match to help USC ahead 1-0 in the match with an 8-6 decision.
The Women of Troy rolled out a couple straight-set wins to boost their lead to 3-0 in the match, as Cristala Andrews cruised in the No. 6 position for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Olivia Colman, and Alison Ramos worked past Julia Wais 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. On court five, Valeria Pulido quickly shrugged off her first-set loss and rattled off a roll to the clinching victory as she forced a third set and then won six straight games to claim a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emma Cioffi.
At No. 4, #114 Kaitlyn Christian saw her Aztec opponent Sierra Ellison fight back from Christian's 5-0 lead in the second to tie it up 5-5, but the Trojan freshman regrouped and responded by stealing the next to games to pin up a 6-3, 7-5 win and make it a 5-0 USC advantage. At No. 2, USC's #10 Danielle Lao kept a steady pace against Alicia Aguilar and dealt out one last break to win her match 6-3, 6-4. On court one, USC's #3 Maria Sanchez also manufactured a late surge to round out the match with her 6-3, 6-3 win as she served up one last ace to cap off the Trojan sweep of the Aztecs.
The USC women have a full schedule for the rest of the week, with No. 27 South Florida coming on Thursday (Feb. 10) for a 1:30 p.m. match before USC finishes off the weekend with a 12 p.m. match on Sunday (Feb. 13) against No. 22 Texas.
