Senior Lizette Salas tied for second and freshman Sophia Popov tied for sixth as No. 1 USC finished second after the final round of the "The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn" event on Tuesday (March 22) at the Championship Golf Course at Ranch Bernardo Inn Golf Resort and Spa in San Diego, Calif.
USC's two match win streak was snapped, but it did post its seventh top 3 finish in as many events this year after taking second at 22-over 886 (299-295-292), seven back of first-place Purdue (879). The Boilermakers, who edged USC last year for the NCAA title by one stroke, matched the Trojans' final round.
Salas notched her third top 3 finish and fourth in the top 7 with a tie for second at 1-under 215 (73-71-71), six off the lead. During her final round, she was 1-under on the front 9 and even on the back with four birdies on the day.
Popov tied for sixth at 3-over 219 (74-73-72), registering her fifth straight top 10 finish. She had four birdies and bogeys on the round. After a bogey on 1, Popov appeared on her way to a prolific round with birdies on six of the next nine holes to get to 5-under. But she cooled off over the final eight holes to finish at even.
Junior Lisa McCloskey finished outside the top 11 for only the first time this year but was still solid, tying for 20th at 9-over 225 (75-76-74). She started the round 3-over through 4, but finished the final 14 holes at 1-under.
Sophomore Cyna Rodriguez tied for 31st at 12-over 228 (78-75-75) while junior Inah Park shook off her second-round struggles to finish with a solid final round and tie for 81st at 28-over 244 (77-91-76).
