LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 USC men's tennis team rolled over the No. 65 Oregon Ducks in a 7-0 victory Friday afternoon at Marks Stadium. The Trojans cruised though doubles play before sweeping the singles matches to win in dominating fashion. USC improves to 17-2 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10 with the win.
The Trojans shook up the doubles pairings for today's match, but you wouldn't know it by how they performed as all three teams seemed to gel instantly. Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento teamed up to make quick work of Izquierdo/Korth 8-1 on court three to get things started. Next up, Emilio Gomez and Steve Johnson tore through the tandem of Clissold/Mayeda 8-2 in the No. 2 slot. The familiar team of #47 Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling slid over to court one and pulled out a 8-6 win over Cambier/Rovello to complete the doubles sweep.
USC surged into the singles matches as #49 Ray Sarmiento jumped ahead early and dismantled Jose Izquierdo 6-0, 6-3 on court four. In the No. 2 spot #36 Jaak Poldma followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Baptiste Faynot.
With the match point up for grabs, USC had its top gun on the job as #1 Steve Johnson impressed all over the court. Johnson wowed the crowd early in the second frame with an incredible cross-court save that sent him sliding into the next court on his way to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alex Rovello to seal the match.
With the match in hand the Trojans still had business to adhere to. Emilio Gomez notched a straight-set victory 6-2, 6-2 over Duncan McDonald-Korth on court five and Michael Grant gutted out a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 win from the No. six slot over Douglas Mayeda. The last match to finish was also the most intense of the day as Robin Cambier repeatedly questioned the officials as he saw Daniel Nguyen pull away for the 6-4, 6-2 victory.
USC returns to action tomorrow (April 2) at 12 p.m. as they host No. 20 Washington at Marks Stadium.
