Sophomore Cyna Rodriguez and freshman Sophia Popov each fired 3-under 69s to guide No. 1 USC into a tie for the lead on the first day of the 2011 Pac-10 Championships on Sunday (April 17) at the Karsten G.C. in Tempe, Ariz.
The Trojans, seeking their fourth conference crown in program history, share the early lead with Stanford at 6-under 282. UCLA is third (284) and is followed by Oregon (290), Arizona (290), California (293), Arizona State (304), Washington (307), Oregon State (309) and Washington State (323).
Rodriguez notched her second 69 of the season to tie for second with a round that included five birdies and two bogeys. She opened 3-under through five holes and was 4-under until her second bogey on 17.
Popov, riding a streak of six straight top 7 finishes, opened with a bogey on 4 before carding birdies on five of the next 13 holes to get to 4-under. A bogey on the 18th hole cost her a share of the lead.
Senior Lizette Salas and junior Lisa McCloskey are tied for 11th with opening round par 72s. Salas opened with bogeys on 2 and 3 but got back to even with birdies on 5 and 6. She bogeyed 9, birdied 10 and carded pars the rest of the way. McCloskey's first-round effort featured three birdies and three bogeys. A birdie on the par 3 16th hole got her to 1-under before a bogey on the par 5 17th hole.
Freshman Rachel Morris is tied for 27th at 4-over 76. She ran into trouble early with double bogeys on 3 and 4 but played the rest of the round at par.
