USC's own Nadia Dan and Forel Davies have helped push the United States women's water polo squad into the gold-medal match at the 2011 World University Games. Playing in Shenzhen, China, for Team USA, Dan and Davies -- both All-Americans and members of USC's 2010 NCAA Championship team -- will soon add some extra hardware to their stockpile.
Dan, who returns to Troy for her senior season, and Davies, who finished her USC career in 2010, have been key forces for the United States in an undefeated run through WUG competition to date. Lefty Dan has been a power scorer for Team USA throughout, knocking in 11 goals through the semifinal and topping out with a four-goal outing in the USA's 12-10 win over Russia. A more defensive Davies also has shown her scoring prowess as well, with five goals across the first six games, including a two-goal game in an 8-6 win over Australia.
Dan, Davies and Team USA will now turn to face host China in the gold-medal game on Monday (Aug. 22) in Shenzhen.
On the men's side, the Trojans are represented by another All-American and national champion in Matt Sagehorn, owner of 2008 and 2009 NCAA titles with the Trojans before graduating from USC. Now with Team USA's WUG unit, Sagehorn has plugged in goals in all of the USA's wins entering the semis. In the United States' first five games, Sagehorn has added six goals, including a pair of two-goal games in USA wins over France and most recently a 10-9 overtime win over Spain in the quarterfinals. The USA men are lined up for a semifinal matchup with Russia tomorrow (Aug. 21) for the right to move into the gold-medal match on Aug. 23.
