PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- The USC women's tennis team flexed some serious singles muscle today in the first round of Riviera/ITA All-American Championship play in Pacific Palisades, Calif. A trio of highly ranked Trojans -- No. 4 seed Zoë Scandalis, No. 5 Sabrina Santamaria and No. 8 Danielle Lao -- cruised through their opening opponents today to move into tomorrow's singles Round of 16.
Scandalis and Santamaria mirrored each other's scores in pinning up 6-1, 6-1 wins each today. Lao wasn't far off that mark with her 6-3, 6-3 win against a highly ranked opponent, as the #11 Lao blasted Northwestern's #12 Kate Turvy.
On the doubles side, top-seeded Trojan tandem Kaitlyn Christian and Santamaria earned a bye for the first round for a ticket to the Round of 16. Qualifiers Gabriella DeSimone and Scandalis, meanwhile, had a tough draw in today's first round and fell 8-2 to a pair from Alabama.
