LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 16 USC women's tennis team have matched their most powerful start to a season since 2007 with a 5-0 overall record that includes four 7-0 sweeps and one 6-1 victory, thanks to today's shutout of visiting No. 27 Pepperdine at Marks Stadium. After another dominating doubles performance, USC rattled off five straight-set singles wins that were capped off by a three-set comeback victory by Alison Ramos to round out the clean sweep. In what's becoming a routine role for the freshman, Gabrielle DeSimone clinched the match with her singles win from court five.
The Trojans have created a corps of doubles power, which steamrolled the Waves today to the tune of 8-2 victories on courts two and three, from Danielle Lao / Alison Ramos and Valeria Pulido / Zoe Scandalis, respectively. Both teams are a perfect 5-0 in dual match doubles so far. At the top spot, Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria combined forces once again to tack up an 8-4 win to bring up singles play.
#99 Christian then made short work of her singles opponent to put USC ahead 2-0 in the match, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arianna Colffer on court four. Her doubles teammate also slammed her singles foe, notching a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Lorraine Guillermo. DeSimone would come through once again with the winning touch. The freshman topped Ali Walters 6-1, 6-4 from court five, and USC had its fifth straight win of the year in hand.
Meanwhile, on court one, #19 Zoe Scandalis was embroiled in a first-set snarl with #72 Ale Granillo, but the freshman stole the first in a tiebreak, then shoved her way past Granillo in the second for a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory to lift the Women of Troy ahead 5-0 in the match. Danielle Lao then extended her singles win streak to nine in a row with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Khunpak Issara at the No. 2 spot, leaving senior Alison Ramos on a warpath to come back from a first-set deficit on court six. Ramos shrugged off Megan Moore's win in the first and pushed on for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win that wrapped up a sunny day and another powerful win for the Women of Troy.
USC's next action takes the Trojans to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA National Indoor Championships, running Feb. 10-13.
