SEATTLE, WASH. -- Now twenty wins into 2012, the No. 1 USC men's tennis team is showing no signs of slowing as it continues to add to its expanding win streak. The 20-0 Trojans have built up 40 consecutive victories dating back to last year. This latest win was sealed in Seattle, as USC topped host No. 22 Washington with a 7-0 sweep in the Trojans' Pac-12 opener.
Aside from a tight doubles match at the No. 1 spot and a three-setter in singles on court four, the Trojans managed to keep largely in control of today's tangle with the Huskies. Individual win streaks ballooned for several Trojans as well, with #2 senior Steve Johnson collecting his 52nd straight singles win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Washington's #14 Kyle McMorrow. #13 senior Daniel Nguyen grabbed his 11th straight singles win of the year on a 6-4, 6-1 win over Marton Bots to start up singles play for the Trojans from his No. 3 position. And Roberto Quiroz held court at the No. 6 spot for a 6-4, 6-2 win that marked his ninth straight victory as he dispatched Husky Nicholas Kamisar.
Doubles play had opened with #18 Nguyen/Sarmiento rolling through Washington's Hawke/Manthou 8-2 at the No. 2 slot. On court one, #15 Johnson/Quiroz pulled through in their extended match for a 9-7 win over Egger/McMorrow to secure the first point of the day, and then Gomez/Hanfmann sealed the deal with an 8-5 win over Bots/Stith on court three.
Nguyen's quick win on court three made it a 2-0 Trojan lead, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win from #23 sophomore Ray Sarmiento at the No. 2 spot over Washington's Emmett Egger. #53 sophomore Emilio Gomez served up the clincher from court five next, making it 4-0 Trojans with his 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Viktor Farkas. Streak-stretchers Quiroz and Johnson were the next to add to the Trojan tally, with #38 freshman Yannick Hanfmann wrapping up the day by recovering from his second-set slip to take down Max Manthou 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.
The 20-0 Trojans look to add to their 1-0 start to Pac-12 play tomorrow (March 31) with a visit to Oregon at 11 a.m. USC head coach Peter Smith is looking to record his 200th career win with the Trojans tomorrow, as today's victory over Washington bulked up his record as a USC head coach to 199-61 in his 10th season at Troy.
