Doris Chen's magnificent run through the arduous 156-golfer field at the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships ended in a tough defeat, the USC rising junior falling to Lauren Diaz-Yi, 10&9, on Saturday (June 22) in Norman, Okla.
Chen advanced to the final after defeating incoming Trojan and future teammate Karen Chung in the semifinals, the fifth match-play win in a row for Chen after she tied for first after 36 holes of stroke play.
But Diaz-Yi, who will be a sophomore at Virginia next season, took immediate control of the 36-hole final. She led 2 up after 5, 5 up after 10 and 6 up after 18 before clinching the win with a par on the 27th hole.
Chen now turns her attention to the 2013 U.S. Women's open later this week, where she will join teammates Annie Park and Kyung Kim as amateurs as well as a host of other professional Trojan golfers.
