Recent USC graduate Haley Anderson, a two-time NCAA title winner as a 2013 senior, and fellow Trojan great Ous Mellouli, won the women's and men's 5K open water swims, respectively, at the 2013 FINA World Championships on Saturday (July 20) in Moll de la Fusta, Spain.
Anderson out-sprinted Brazil's Poliana Okimoto Cintra over the final stretch to win 56:34.2 to 56:34.4. Becca Mann was third in 56:44.7.
"The race felt really good and it's an honor to win," Anderson said after the race. "This is my first World Championships gold medal and my first international 5k swim."
Anderson won NCAA titles in the 500y and 1650y free at the 2013 NCAA Championships and also won silver at the 2012 London Olympics in the 10K.
Mellouli, a former Trojan NCAA title winner who won gold in the 10K at the 2012 Olympics, won the 5K in Spain in 53:30.4, edging Canada's Eric Hedlin (53:31.6).
Mellouli won bronze in the 10K on Monday.
