Six Trojans To Play In U.S. Women's Amateur

Four of the five members of USC's 2013 NCAA Championship team as well as two incoming freshmen will compete at the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur beginning Monday (Aug. 5) at the Country Club of Charleston (S.C.).
Senior Sophia Popov and junior Doris Chen will be joined by sophomores Annie Park and Kyung Kim as well as freshmen Gabriella Then and Karen Chung when the 156-woman field kicks off with two rounds of stroke play Monday to determine who advances to the 64-person match-play tournament. Match play action runs Wednesday through Sunday (Aug. 7-11).
All six Trojans were among only the 32 exemptions given out for the event. Park earned hers as the 2013 NCAA individual title winner though would have also qualified with her top 25 ranking in the Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings. Kim got hers as the 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion. Chen earned it three times over as the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links runner-up, being top 25 in WWAGR and completing 72 holes at the 2013 U.S. Women's Open. Popov qualified with a top eight finish at the 2012 Women's World Amateur Team Championship, Then earned her spot after her recent win at the 2013 U.S. Girls' Junior and Chung is playing thanks to her top 25 in the WWAGR.
USC, under 18th-year coach Andrea Gaston, begins the 2013-14 season Sept. 9-10 at the Fall Preview at the Tulsa (Okla.) C.C.
The Trojans also have 10 former players competing in this weeks British Open.
