SEATTLE – The USC women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest at Washington's Husky Soccer Field on Sunday evening, with the lone goal a penalty kick finish by the Huskies in the 58th minute.
The Trojans (7-4-1, 2-1 Pac-12) came out hot in the first half, dominating the Huskies (9-2-1) in possession and run of play, as they outshot their opponent 6-3 in the first half. The biggest opportunity for the Huskies came on a free kick just outside the 18 yard box in the 34th minute by Shaye Villanueva that was tipped by Trojan keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme off the crossbar and the game remained tied, 0-0. Kayla Mills and Sydney Sladek led the team with two shots in the half.
In the second half however, the Huskies came out on the offensive, eventually outshooting the Trojans, 10-4 in the half. In the 58th minute, Mills was whistled for a foul in the box in what was a physical game and the Huskies had a penalty kick opportunity. Shannon Simon took the shot for the Huskies and although Prudhomme guessed the right way, the shot had just enough pace on it and sneaked by the dive of Prudhomme to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
The Trojans went back on the offensive after the goal, looking for the equalizer. Morgan Andrews had some good opportunities in the 62nd and 70th minutes, but one ran wide of the goal and the other Husky keeper Megan Kufeld made the save. Despite multiple opportunities, the Trojans were unable to net the equalizer.
Prudhomme finished the game with five saves, the most for her in Pac-12 play this season.
The Trojans will return home to host Arizona State at 3 p.m. PT on Friday, October 9 at 3 p.m. PT.
