MALIBU, CALIF. — USC senior Nick Crystal whipped up a decisive opening singles win at the Oracle ITA Masters today to stay alive in the competitive draw out in Malibu. His victory scores him a place in tomorrow's Round of 16.
After starting the day in new territory, playing mixed doubles with a partner from Cal, Crystal stepped back into singles action and found his winning form. A 6-3 doubles loss alongside Golden Bear Denise Starr in the morning left Crystal with an afternoon Round of 32 singles matchup to focus on. There, the #27 Crystal took down Missouri-Kansas City's Airam Castellano with a swift 6-1, 6-2 decision that shoots him into tomorrow's Round of 16. Crystal is due to battle Denver's Diogo Rocha in that matchup in Malibu.
