Brandon Holt Claims SoCal Intercollegiate Singles Crown

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- USC was guaranteed to wind up with a trophy today. The only question was, which Trojan would be holding it up? In an all-Trojan singles final, freshman Brandon Holt was able to top senior Nick Crystal to claim the Southern California Intercollegiate singles championship today at Marks Stadium.
Holt was carrying a five-match win streak on his way into this event, and he remained on a tear in the singles draw this week. The Trojan freshman would not surrender a single set as he racked up five straight-set wins. The last three matches all were against his own teammates, although Holt showed little mercy as he continued to dish out straight-set wins. In the title match, Holt's 6-4, 6-3 win came at the expense of his senior teammate Crystal. The #27 Crystal's tightest match had been a three-setter in the quarterfinals, which he followed with a decisive straight-set win over Bruin Max Cressy to take his place in today's final.
Holt and fellow freshman Riley Smith -- another singles victim of Holt's -- were close to tacking up another title this week as the duo worked into the doubles title match. That was rained out yesterday, however. Their opponents from Texas Tech were unable to stay in town through to Monday, leaving the final unplayed.
