LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- USC sophomore Jake DeVine and freshman Riley Smith were edged out in the semifinals of doubles play at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic at UNLV today, while DeVine also took a singles semifinal loss to wrap the Trojans' trip to Las Vegas.
DeVine had maneuvered his way into the singles semis after picking up two strong wins on Day One of action at UNLV yesterday. Today, the #63-ranked DeVine was up against UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio for their semifinal bout. The Bruin was able to fend off the Trojan in this one, as Di Giulio grabbed a 6-3, 7-6 (4) decision to steal a spot in the final.
In doubles, DeVine paired up with freshman Riley Smith after a bye in yesterday's first round. Today in the quarterfinals, DeVine/Smith notched an 8-5 win over Grand Canyon's Cvitanovic/Lang to step into the semifinals. There, the Trojan duo was upended by Portland's Garcia/Pervolarakis in a tense tiebreaker that wound up as an 8-7 (8) decision in favor of the Pilots.
That wraps the fall season for the Trojans, who will turn to team action in the fall in a couple months.
