Gussie Johns Named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week

LOS ANGELES -- USC women's lacrosse sophomore goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C.) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 11-17. It is her third-career weekly honor from the league, her second this season. Johns was named Rookie of the Week once in 2015. Stanford's Kelsey Murray was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Colorado's Miranda Stinson was chosen Rookie of the Week.
Johns' selection is the school-record ninth MPSF award won by a USC player this season. Five different Trojans have received weekly honors. Johns (twice), Tarleton (twice), and junior attacker Michaela Michael (three times) each have multiple awards. Women of Troy have won MPSF weekly honors 21 times in program history with eight offensive awards, eight defensive awards, and five rookie of the week honorees.
Johns made seven crucial saves in USC's 14-11 road victory over No. 12-ranked Northwestern. Johns was stout in goal as she made three stops in the first half and four more in the second. Her second-half saves included a pair of big stops on Wildcat free-position shots. Johns also picked up a ground ball in the Trojans' winning effort and helped the Women of Troy remain one of just two undefeated teams in the nation at 14-0. Johns' 14th win also set a USC single-season record for wins by a goalie and tied the program's most wins in a season.
The fifth-ranked Women of Troy (15-0, 7-0 MPSF) now return home to face No. 9-ranked conference rival Stanford (12-2, 7-0). First place in the league is on the line when the teams meet at the LA Memorial Coliseum on Friday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m. PT. The game will be carried live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area. On Sunday, April 24, USC completes the regular-season schedule with its Senior Day against UC Davis at noon PT on McAlister Field.
