USC Women Win Again, Topping Long Beach State 75-60
November 20, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans never trailed tonight en route to making it a 4-0 start to the season.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team improved its winning push to the 2017-18 season by posting a 75-60 win over visiting Long Beach State tonight at Galen Center. The win boosted the Trojans to 4-0 overall, while a trio of Trojans hit double digits, including double-double outings from Aliyah Mazyck and Kristen Simon. Long Beach State goes to 0-4 with the loss.
USC was hot out of the gates in shooting 67 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes before cooling in the second quarter to stand at 50 percent from the floor in the first half of action. Still, the Trojans were outpacing Long Beach State's 26.5 percent first-half effort, while two Trojans — Sadie Edwards and Kristen Simon — were in double digits by halftime. During the second half, Simon worked her way into her first double-double of the year while Aliyah Mazyck notched the first double-double of her career. The junior finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Simon wrapped up with 20 points and 12 boards. Edwards led the Trojan scoring with 25 points, as USC finished out the the game shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and out rebounding the 49ers 46-31. Long Beach State received a game-high 29 points from Shanaijah Davison to go with 12 from Ma'Qhi Berry and 10 from Martina McCowan. LBSU shot 33 percent in the game after heating up to 60 percent in the fourth quarter.
USC opened up a 9-0 lead on the visiting 49ers, with Sadie Edwards contributing five points with a bucket and a 3-pointer for the Trojan cause. An 8-0 Trojan rally carried the hosts farther out of reach, as Jordan Adams hit Kristen Simon for a fast break finish, then nailed a 3-pointer of her own before Edwards stepped up and converted a three-point play to craft a 19-4 USC advantage. Aliyah Mazyck would join the 3-point party soon after, and Dani Milisic became the fifth Trojan to score in wrapping the first frame with a bucket in the paint, and USC was up 28-11 after 10 minutes of action. In the second, the teams would stay in stride as USC's scoring pace slowed, but the Trojans still gripped a strong halftime advantage with a 40-23 lead on Long Beach State at the break.
In the third, Aliyah Mazyck would maneuver her way to her first career double-double, hauling in her 10th rebound and then serving up the assist to Edwards for a bucket that had USC ahead 49-31 at the midway point of the third. Soon after, USC pieced together an 8-0 run that included Minyon Moore's first points of the night, and USC got out ahead 57-34 for its largest lead of the game. Long Beach State would heat up from the perimeter next, landing a three late in the third and then coming out of the fourth with two more bombs. That cut USC's lead to 59-45, but Edwards would step in and land her third 3-pointer to provide a lift for the Trojans, up 62-45 early in the fourth. Long Beach State would cut in during the final stretch, but USC's lead was too much, and Moore and Marguerite Effa rounding out the scoring for USC to finish out a 75-60 Trojan victory.
Next, the Trojans head to Hawai'i for three games at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu. USC opens up against Purdue on Friday (Nov. 24) before taking on Marist on Saturday (Nov. 25) and then wrapping up against host Hawai'i on Sunday (Nov. 26).
