No. 6 USC Edged Out In OT At No. 5 UCLA
November 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Trojans wrap the regular season in second place in the Pac-12 and holding a 14-3-1 overall record.
WESTWOOD, CALIF. — The No. 6 USC women's soccer team battled crosstown rival No. 5 UCLA into an overtime decision tonight in Westwood, taking the lead twice in the first half on a brace from senior captain Nicole Molen before the Bruins countered with an equalizer in regulation and the winner in overtime. The 3-2 OT loss puts USC even with UCLA in the final Pac-12 standings, locked into second place in the conference at 8-2-1 with the NCAA Selection Show coming up Monday to reveal postseason plans for both teams. USC finishes up the regular season with a 14-3-1 — the same total win count the Trojans held at the close of the 2016 campaign before going on a tear to the NCAA title.
"What a game and what an environment," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said of tonight's match, played out in front of 11,925 fans. "Thanks to LA for coming out. To have over 11,000 fans at a women's soccer game is phenomenal, and I thought the game was entertaining. Two really, really good teams played today, and we were unfortunately on the losing end. I thought the first half we played really well, I thought their adjustments in the second half were good. All the credit goes to them and their willingness to fight through it. I thought we played well enough to win the game, but we shot ourselves in the foot with some of our mistakes."
The Trojans drew first blood in tonight's crosstown showdown at UCLA's Drake Stadium, striking in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Jalen Woodward would feed the ball to Julia Bingham on the left side, and the sophomore sliced in a cross to the far post. Senior captain Nicole Molen went airborne, getting a strong head to the ball to ping it through, notching the third goal of the year for Molen and staking the Trojans to a 1-0 advantage.
In the 26th minute, UCLA would pull it level, with Kaiya McCullough carrying the ball on goal and slotting her shot to the low left corner, knotting it at 1-1. Minutes later, USC goalkeeping Kaylie Collins would get called into action once again, and the redshirt freshman made a nice save to stop a Bruin header on frame. USC would piece together some well-worked series on the attack, but came up empty on those chances. In the 34th minute, however, USC broke through once again. Savannah DeMelo launched a corner kick into the box, where the UCLA goalkeeper whiffed on the clearance but a UCLA defender got a foot on it, caroming the ball up and into the crossbar, then knocking it out before it crossed the line. As the ball stayed loose and bouncing in front of goal, it was Molen again who came through. The senior took a stab at the ball and poked it through, taking the Trojans into the lead once again, up 2-1 on their rivals.
That score would hold up until halftime, and on through the next 20 minutes of the second half. End-to-end play was going strong in the second, with the Trojan back line standing their ground for clearances while USC's Sydney Sladek and Tara McKeown worked to send in centering passes to try to create offensive opportunities for the Trojans. In the 65th minute, UCLA intercepted the ball in USC territory, carrying it straight to goal and slipping it through to the back of the net for the equalizer. As time ticked down, Molen had a look at a possible third goal, but it was hauled in by UCLA's keeper in the final minute, and overtime was imminent. There, UCLA benefited from a shot that deflected off a USC defender, wrong-footing Collins and dropping in to stand as the game-winner for the Bruins in the 92nd minute of play.
USC now awaits its seeding and pairing for the NCAA Tournament, which will be revealed in the NCAA Selection Show at 1:30 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 6).
