Amber Gore led the Trojans in the 6K and Chloe Berry in the 5K race at the 37th annual UC Riverside Invitational held at the Ag/Ops Course in Riverside, Calif. today (Sept. 16). In addition, Lauren Maurer posted her 6K personal best and Jennifer Daly her 5K PR in the races today. There were 72 schools represented in the four meets today (2 women's and 2 men's races) and the Trojans placed 25th in the 6K race and 18th in the 5K race.
"We put in a really good two-week training block so we weren't really coming out here looking to have an incredible day racing," said USC cross country coach Patrick Henner. "I saw some good improvements. I was pleased with Amber Gore, again. Lauren Maurer did a really nice job. I thought in the 5K race, Chloe (Berry) did a great job and Jennifer Daly did a great job…so the pieces are there. It is just going to be a process for us, the training and learning how to race. We just have to keep getting better week after week."
The 6K race began at 7:30 a.m. and the junior Gore was the Trojans' top finisher, placing 70th overall with a time of 21:40.09. Her time was just eight seconds off her PR set on Oct. 1, 2016. The second USC finisher was the junior Mauer with a PR of 22:29.2, 26 seconds faster than her previous best 6K race.
USC's final three runners in the 6K race and running that distance for the first time were freshman Julia Bounds (23:56.6), freshman Sydney Tullai (24:23.3) and junior Angel Vallier (25:43.1).
The 5K race began at 8:40 a.m. and the sophomore Berry led the way for the Trojans with a time of 18:54.1, 65th overall. The freshman Daly had a PR of 19:06.5, 15 seconds better than her high school 5K best.
Sophomore Kamryn Weber was 0.2 seconds off her personal best with a time of 19:32.4 today. Junior Rachel Glynn had a time of 20:17.0 and freshman Mackenzie Ellison had a time of 21:04.8.
USC will next be in action at the UNLV XC Invite in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sept. 23.
