Women of Troy Bring Back Championships from Battle of the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO--The USC women's tennis team opened up the 2017 season by bringing back two championships from one tournament and reaching the semifinals of another.
Sophomore Becca Weissmann, a transfer from LSU, won the Women's Open Singles championship on Sunday (Sept. 24) at the Battle of the Bay Tournament. With this win, Weissmann earned a wild card into the main draw of the Pro Circuit event in Redding, Calif. in Sept. 2018.
Weissmann also brought home a second trophy as she and partner, fellow sophomore Angela Kulikov won the Women's Open Doubles Championship.
"This was a great first tournament for all four of our players," said head coach Alison Swain. "It's always hard to play teammates in the end, but it's also a testament to our players competing very well and making deep runs in the tournament. The doubles was also a high point; we've been focusing on our movement and being more aggressive. Becca and Angela embraced that and played with a lot of confidence in the finals."
Senior captain Gabby Smith also made an impressive run at the USTA Pro Circuit event in Lubbock, Texas. After going undefeated through qualifiers to secure placement in the main draw, Smith reached the semifinals where she fell to Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-3.
"Gabby played with a lot of determination and grit all week long," said Swain. "To make it to the semifinals of a Pro Circuit is a huge accomplishment. To do that after playing all the way through qualifiers and beating the caliber of players she did is exceptional."
USC will see action at two tournaments next weekend: the ITA All-American Championships and the USC-UGA Challenge. The ITA All-American Championships will be held in Pacific Palisades, Calif. and run from Sept. 30 through Oct. 8. The USC-UGA Challenge will take place at Marks Tennis Stadium on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and will be a round robin event.
