No. 21 Cal Claims 62-59 Win Over USC Women In All-Out Battle At Galen Center
January 21, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Golden Bears get the win after 14 lead changes in a fierce Pac-12 matchup.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 21 California, fighting through 16 ties and 14 lead changes and winding up just off the mark in last-ditch attempts to force overtime as the Bears emerged with a 62-59 win over the Trojans at Galen Center. USC goes to 13-6 overall and 3-5 in Pac-12 play with its second loss of the season to ranked Cal. The Bears improve to 14-5, 5-3.
It was a hot-handed first half at Galen Center as the Trojans hit at a 57 percent clip from the floor and went 8-of-10 from the stripe to get a step ahead of California, up 37-35 by halftime. Cal had shot 44.8 percent from the floor for those first 20 minutes and owned the boards 16-8 while both teams were even from the beyond the arc with five 3-pointers apiece. In the third quarter, the teams fought through seven ties and five lead changes in a battle that saw the Bears lead 52-50 entering the fourth. USC was up 59-58 with under two minutes to go, but could not get another bucket to drop while Cal moved ahead for the win. USC finished out the game shooting 37.7 percent and wound up 6-of-27 from 3-point range. Cal was 7-of-15 from beyond the arc and wrapped up at 43.4 percent from the floor. The Bears also outrebounded the Trojans 35-26, although USC nabbed seven steals to interrupt Cal.
USC received a game-high 21 points from Kristen Simon along with 19 points from Minyon Moore and 13 from Aliyah Mazyck, who tallied her 100th career 3-pointer during the game. Jordan Adams led USC on the boards with a season-high 10 rebounds, and Sadie Edwards delivered five assists for the Trojans. Cal was paced by Kristine Anigwe's 20 points, with Mikayla Cowling adding 12 and Asha Thomas and Kianna Smith hitting 10 apiece, while Penina Davidson and CJ West picked up 10 rebounds each.
The game tied up three more times in the first five minutes of the third as USC and Cal traded buckets. The Bears would knock down a couple threes for a couple short stints in the lead, but each time the Trojans fired back. Simon was a force in the paint and at the line, converting a three-point play to nudge USC ahead 48-47 with 4:10 on the clock. Moore would net USC a 50-48 lead with 2:05 to go in the third, but Cal equalized and then had a successful trip to the stripe to move into a 52-50 lead on the way into the fourth.
Cal threatened to pull away with back-to-back buckets to start the fourth and build a 56-50 advantage, but Mazyck reeled them back in in burying her third three to make it 56-53 at 8:25. That bomb would lead to a 7-0 USC run as Moore followed with a coupe free throws and then a take to the hoop that tugged USC ahead 57-56 with 4:15 on the clock. The tug-of-war continued until USC was just off the mark on a couple 3-point tries. Cal followed with a three-point play and then a single free throw to grip a 62-59 lead with 18 seconds left. USC got three looks at landing the equalizer, missed each, and then benefited from a jump ball in the Trojans' favor with 4 ticks to go. USC got that one last look it wanted, but was off the mark once again as Cal gathered in the defensive board to wrap the win for the Bears.
USC now hits the road for the next stretch of Pac-12 play. The Trojans first visit WSU for a 7 p.m. clash on Friday (Jan. 26) in Pullman, then head to Seattle to face Washington at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 28).

USC countered an early 8-0 run by Cal with a 10-0 surge that tugged the Trojans into a 12-10 lead at the midway point of the first frame. That USC rally included 3-pointers knocked down by Aliyah Mazyck and Kristen Simon, while Minyon Moore added one of her own soon after to get USC ahead 15-12 at 4:25. In the final stretch, however, Cal managed three straight buckets to sneak back into the lead, up 22-20 at the end of the first. Again, USC had an answer, this time in the form of Moore, who rattled off eight straight points for the Trojans to take back the lead, up 28-25 on Moore's second 3-pointer of the game. After a couple more ties, Mazyck drained her second three and 100th of her Trojan career to level the game for the eighth time, even at 33-33 with 3:50 on the clock. Cal maneuvered ahead next, only to see Sadie Edwards deliver a jumper before Moore dropped two more free throws to get USC a 37-35 halftime lead.
