Dribbles and Scribbles
October 12, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Trojan Outreach, Features
This weekend, Trojan Outreach and the USC women's basketball team hosted Dribbles and Scribbles, a body-positivity event, with LAUSD's Bright Elementary School.
Female students between nine and 12 years old began their day at the women's basketball practice at USC's Galen Center. The girls had a front row seat to watch practice while enjoying a free lunch. Following practice and a short basketball clinic taught by the coaches, the girls headed to the Galen Center patio with the team for the remainder of the afternoon.
To help the girls feel positive and empowered, Trojan Outreach provided paint supplies and materials for each participant to create a self-portrait featuring the traits and qualities that made every participant feel beautiful. As a challenge, every self-portrait required the incorporation of a basketball.
The students experienced a series of body positivity exercises to ensure that each girl accepted and appreciated her body.
The girls shared encouraging words of empowerment to their art partners, revealed their super powers, and and made the "Love Conquers All" pledge to celebrate and reinforce the importance of self-love in mind, body and soul. Everyone recited the pledge which includes the line, "With all the love within ourselves, we will continue to Fight On and conquer all."
